バートラムと友人三人は「ホーク団」という小さな窃盗団を組んでいた。バートラムはウェイトレスをしている母親と二人暮らし。父親の記憶はほとんどない。バートラムが七歳のとき、父親は人を殺して終身刑となり、刑務所に収監されたのだ。ある日、バートラムはレストランで「ショット・メイド・イン・USA」の高級レザージャケットを盗む。それが、のちにバートラムだけでなく、その周囲にも致命的な黒い影を落とす。警察の苦情処理部門で捜査員をしているローランド・ベニートは同僚の捜査員とともに、二人の警察官を尋問するために派遣される。刑務所の看守が住むアパートの部屋から、大きな騒音が聞こえるという苦情があったのだ。この看守は四階の窓から飛び降りたが、すんでのところで二人の捜査官が彼を掴んで引っ張り上げた。この看守がローランドの孫の学友の父親ということもあり、この男が勤務している刑務所で一人の囚人が死んだという噂を聞いていた。そして、その囚人の死後、この看守が迫害を受けて身の危険を感じていることも。囚人の死は自殺ではなかったのか？東ユトランド・テレビ２に務めるジャーナリストのアン・ラーセンもこの事件を調べている。関係者全員がパトリック・アスプという囚人で一つにつながっているようだ。この男はまだ赤ん坊の実子を殺害し、この看守が勤務する刑務所に収監されている。ミステリアスな死が続き、最高裁判所の裁判官がこつぜんと姿を消すと、ローランド・ベニートとアン・ラーセンは手を組んで、すべての事件の縦糸を探り始める。そしてたどり着いたのがバートラムが犯したジャケット窃盗事件。アンもバートラムを起点に調査の手を広げていく。
