Charlotte Brontë est née en 1816 à Thornton dans le Yorkshire. Elle la troisième fille du révérend Patrick Brontë, au sein d'une famille de condition modeste qui compte six enfants.
En 1845, elle découvre les écrits de sa sœur Emily et, enthousiasmée, propose à ses sœurs de publier un recueil collectif sous le titre Poems by Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell (1846). Elles se lancent alors dans l'écriture de romans, et c'est avec son deuxième texte, Jane Eyre (1947), publié sous le pseudonyme de Currer Bell, que Charlotte trouve un éditeur et rencontre le succès.
La maladie l'emporte en 1855.
