Né en 1935 à New York, Robert Silverberg a publié sa première nouvelle à l’âge de dix-huit ans et son premier roman, Révolte sur Alpha C, à dix-neuf ans à peine. Le Cycle de Majipoor, paru tout au long des années 1980 et 1990, est son œuvre la plus célèbre. Il a reçu en 2004, pour l’ensemble de son œuvre, le titre de Grand Maître de la science-fiction, la plus haute distinction honorifique du domaine, décerné par l’Association des auteurs américains de science-fiction.
