The title "Ill at Ease" alludes to the army term "stand at ease", about his National Army Service (South African National Defense Force) and his life in general as well as the undercurrent of uneasiness that is so typical of South Africa's history, now perhaps more than ever. It also refers to the author's aversion to politics and war and his natural skepticism of politics and nationalism, which represents the average opinion of men of his generation.
