An erotic novel in the tradition of the classic works of Victorian erotica. At the beginning of the novel, Harry Hotspur is an eighteen year old boy who is eager to lose his virginity, and he does this by taking advantage of his family's maidservant.
Having acquired a taste for licentious pleasure, Harry proceeds to seduce Miss Monica, the local vicar's daughter , who is several years older than himself. Harry's affair with Miss Monica comes to an end when she marries Sir Charles Delamere.
After completing his school education, Harry is offered a clerkship by his Uncle Mortimer, who is a solicitor in London. On arriving in London, Harry plunges into a life of debauchery, frequenting the cheap prostitutes in the vicinity of Waterloo Road.
When his uncle dies of a heart attack, Harry is the sole beneficiary of his uncle's will. Harry is now a wealthy young man, and he can afford to pay for the favours of a higher class of prostitute.
Harry's new found life of luxury comes to a sudden end, however, when he loses all his money as a result of bad investments on the stock exchange.
Miss Monica, or Lady Monica as she now is, assists him to get a position as a journalist on The Morning Chronicle. Harry is a big success in his new career,writing articles for the social column of the newspaper.
He now renews his affair with Lady Monica, and he also sets his sights on Eveline Lanyon, the daughter of the proprietor of The Morning Chronicle.
Harry hopes to further his career by marrying Eveline, but he knows that her parents will never approve of the marriage, so he persuades the innocent young girl to elope with him. After her virtue has been compromised in this way, Eveline's parents have no choice but to give their blessing to the union between their daughter and Harry.
