“What can you offer me?” This strange man intrigued her. And the timbre of his cool, measured voice, the way his eyes sparkled as he looked her over, was setting a fire under her skin.
“Your uncle promised you your freedom if you could make golden items, yes?”
She nodded. The man shrugged, tinkling small bells braided into his hair.
“I can do this for you,” he stepped ever closer, “but I ask something in return.” Her eyebrows raised.
“Oh?” her hands lowered, letting her gown drop open again. He looked to he bosom and smiled, then back to her face. She was breathing faster and a blush colored her cheeks.
“When you are queen, I shall have your first-born child.”
She blinked in surprise.
“Don’t be foolish. I shall never be queen, not as long as my uncle reins in my stead.”
“Ah, but he cannot long keep you locked away if you should meet his demands, can he?”
“Perhaps. But what would you do with my firstborn child?”
“That is for me to decide,” the little man cackled.
She considered for a moment. Then she frowned and climbed back onto her bed.
“I had something different in mind,” she growled, as she flipped back her loose hair.
