On the journey, Sorcha and her younger brothers capture the Roman cavalry officer Lucius Gallus Antonius. Against, Sorcha's wishes they spare his life, to use him as a valuable potential bargaining chip with the Romans. But he's an enemy! Grieving over the deaths of her father and three brothers, Sorcha yearns for revenge against the Romans, not negotiating with them.
Sorcha treats Lucius with contempt, but after he save her family from treacherous friends and foe, eventually Sorcha comes to admire not just his physique and good looks, but his warrior cunning and his honour.
Lucius has been raised to serve Rome. The ambitions of his family to rise to the senatorial class rest with him. He must prove himself as an outstanding leader to Vespasian, commander of the Second Legion, and return to Rome in glory as one of the conquerors of Britannia.
When Sorcha is captured by Romans, the only way to gain her freedom is to be exchanged for Lucius. He leaves captivity to return to his place with the army of Vespasian, to impose the will of Rome on the barbarian Celts. But is that what he still wants?
Will Sorcha ever hold the man she loves again? Or is Lucius another person she loved then lost, his future subject to the determination of Rome to subjugate the people of Britannia?
