Following the vicious attack just outside Néartanis (see The Goldstones and the Way), Abigail, Shaunan, Aidren, Ellyn and Ylonya reach the city safely, and cross to the land of Lènium, where Ylonya's friend, Genira, helps them. After some more adventures, they arrive in Ranusheim, where Abigail's unique powers are revealed and she is given a quest to fulfil by the powerful Wayzenmoot.
Augmented by two new members, Tremond and Ednor, the company retrace their steps to Néartanis, before setting out on an even more dangerous journey, through the perilous Fenland in Yrusian, towards the dark land of Talamdor.
In the meantime, Jacob arrives in Talamunem City with Portak, and enters the service of the Prophet of the One. When the Talamdorian army sets out to invade Veylindré, the Prophet shares some startling news with him…
