Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) fue el creador de la literatura fantástica de horror, que habría de influir sobre toda la literatura europea, y especialmente sobre los "poetas malditos": Baudelaire, Rimbaud, Mallarmé y Verlaine. Escribió sesenta y ocho cuentos, entrelos que sobresalen El gato negro (que da nombre a este volumen), El tonel de amontillado, Ligeia, Los crímenes de la calle Morgue, La carta robada, etcétera, que constituyen lo que se ha dado en llamar Narraciones extraordinarias.
Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) created the horror fantasy genre which influenced the European literature of the time and especially the cursed poets: ‘Baudelaire, Rimbaud, Mallarmé and Verlaine.’ He wrote sixty-eight short stories, among which The Black Cat (included in this volume), The Cask of Amontillado, Ligeia, The Murders in the Rue Morgueand The Purloined Letter outstand on their own known by the name of Extraordinary Tales.
