The Secret Life of a Cautious Man is a psychological thriller about a man who has the rug pulled out from under him then makes dangerous choices in a quest to find himself.
Gerard Pearson's comfortable, predictable life is suddenly thrown into disarray when he lose his job. Well into middle age, he struggles to find work and finally decides to drive for a rideshare company. During the course of his new "career" he spends a great deal of time in his car with strangers. He's surprised to find himself intrigued with one of them - a charismatic man who earns his living as a leather escort and in short order introduces Gerard to bdsm. It turns out the master, who has a disturbing past as a sex trafficker, is seeking a full time servant and decides to enslave Gerard. He devises a plot to cause the crash of a private jet and make it appear that Gerard is among the passengers, all of whom perish. With nobody looking for Gerard his master gradually indoctrinates him into an existence of consensual enslavement, but his wife, a psychologist, traces his steps and uncovers his involvement in the gay bdsm relationship. She's persistent and with the help of a private investigator discovers that Gerard is still alive, and locates him. He is "rescued" and his master apprehended, but when he returns home Gerard must now decide whether the life he shared with his wife for 25 years is worth rebuilding.
