My jaw drops when I see Austin Love stand up with his paddle raised high in the air. I haven't seen him for three years, and I sure as hell didn't expect to see him here.
The auctioneer lets out a whistle. "Can I get 1.1 million dollars? Going once, going twice, and sold!"
When Austin stares at me with his gray eyes, I feel like shuddering. With his silky black hair, arresting eyes, and perfect bone structure, he definitely qualifies as handsome. But he's also intimidating. In high school, I felt a vague anxiety around him, like he would punish me if I did the slightest thing wrong.
I remember Dad whispering to me, "That's Mr. Love. He's the CEO of my company."

Before I leave the locker room, I let out a deep breath. It's a small mercy that Janice decided to destroy my clothes after the country club closed for the day, so at least no one is going to see me leave the club in nothing but a towel.

When I step out of the locker room, I see a man staring at me from across the room. And it's not just any man. It's Sam Chance.

Which makes it so awkward that he's my best friend's dad.
He glowers at me. What did I do? Surprising me, he growls, "That outfit is too godd**n short."
I flush, instinctively pulling at the hem of my skirt. My French maid outfit is more revealing than what I normally wear.
Caught by the King
Sounding amused, the king asks, "Were you attempting to steal one of my jeweled eggs?"
I wince. Instead of directly answering his question, I repeat, "Please have mercy on a pitiful subject like me, your majesty!" Maybe if I suck up hard enough, I'll end up going to prison for only three years.
"Stand up," he says.
Because he's the freaking king, I have no choice but to obey. My legs tremble as I lift myself off the floor.
He raises his hand, and I flinch, expecting a slap. However, he only strokes my cheek, his gentle touch belying his powerful muscular body.
"You are a lovely thing," he murmurs. A rakishly handsome smirk breaks out across his face. "Much too lovely for prison."
