Introduction
They say that 'what is measured grows'. In other words, simply measuring one metric or another may be enough to help improve that metric. This is true for weight loss, where simply weighing yourself regularly can help you lose weight, and of course it is true for digital marketing.
If you are not measuring your website's progress or growth, then there is no way for you to apply the scientific method to ensure that you continue on an upward trajectory. Without measuring, you have no way of knowing what works and what doesn't, and essentially you're flying blind!
But measuring the success of a website is something that requires some science in itself. What should you measure exactly? What are the most important metrics? And how do these numbers work to provide a detailed understanding of your traffic and your success? This guide will try to answer all of those questions and more by focusing on the 8 most important metrics to track!
1. Track visits
The first thing to consider is the number of visits you receive to your website. This metric on its own isn't necessarily that helpful, as it doesn't necessarily provide a lot of information about the type of person who visits your site, how they interact with your content, or anything else.
Also, most websites will not see a visit as the "end goal". If you intend to build brand awareness, engagement, and following, you will need to lower your bounce rate (see below). If you are trying to make money, then your "goal" will be to increase your AdSense income or make more sales of your products. The visits themselves are just an aside!
However, despite this, you need to know your visits to understand all the other data that you are obtaining. You need to know your visits so that you can know what percentage of those visitors are buying from you and thus calculate your conversion rate. Your visits tell you how many people you have to work with and allow you to formulate a strategy on that basis.
And if your main income comes from AdSense impressions
(instead of clicks), then there is a very good chance that your number of visits correlates quite directly with your overall income.
However, when looking at this metric, it is important to recognize the subtle distinctions between the different types of "visits" and "visits."............
