Europe is on the verge of economic collapse following World War II. The communists are at the gate with civil war in Greece and similar movements in Italy, France, and Germany, threatening the West. Our group of patriots once more are called upon to help the Allied cause and stop the collapse by propping up the industrial base and infrastructure of the Western democracies.
Richard Blaine and Luis Renault go to Greece to defend democracy and stop Tito's Yugoslavian forces from overrunning Greece before the American intervention. Rick's new construction company in Paris, managed by his friend – and former pianist – seeks to rebuild the infrastructure that had been critically damaged in France, Belgium, and Germany. Their efforts before the Marshall Plan can be put into place give the Americans time to secure a foreign aid package through Congress and avoid the collapse of the West.
Upon their return to Morocco, Rick and Ilsa observe what French colonialism has done to their beloved adopted country. Rick, who has always championed the underdog, again joins the fight against the French colonialists. With the help of Luis, brother Pierre, and his Berber followers, along with old friends like Mr. Ferrari, they give the king the support he needs to combat the French and acquire Morocco's independence.
Algeria, however, remains attached to France. Algerian French paramilitary and terrorist groups fight each other to bring about the independence of Algiers and the people of North Africa from the yoke of colonialism. The fight for freedom is always nearby for Richard and Ilsa Blaine, their growing family, and close friends.
