In this 'new world', women were no longer safe.
In this 'new world', men had emerged once again to become women's greatest predator, even worse than the zombies.
It is in this world that I'm determined to run away, escape into the deepest neck of the woods where I will never be found by men.
Until, one stumbles upon me for shelter.
EXCERPT:
By the time I finally stopped, it was twilight. If I had to guess, I'd probably put fifteen miles between me and the place of the original gunfire. I hadn't heard any other gunfire for the rest of the afternoon, so I supposed it was safe to say that the shooter had perished at the hands of my pet zombies.
I gave my loyal followers a theatrical bow. "Your service is much appreciated, my minions!" I called out.
They moaned in reply.
That would have to do.
I dumped my pack at the foot of a tall spruce, then set to work creating a little campfire for myself. These nights, the woods were terribly cold, so cold even the one thick blanket I carried with me wasn't enough to keep me warm.
By the time I got the fire blazing, it was completely dark. A couple of stars could be seen through the gaps in the trees above me, and the moon was a skinny sliver, a cheeky Cheshire cat smile.
In the darkness, just beyond the scope of the campfire light, I could hear the zombies rustling in their spots, inching closer, waiting for the twelfth hour.
Because I kept my zombies so close, I couldn't afford to miss an orgasm. I had to do it by clockwork. One missed orgasm, one overslept morning, and I'd find myself being torn apart, limb by limb, by Paul, Susan, Pete and all those other zombies that I'd mistaken as 'friends' for the better part of the last year.
I quickly cleaned and gutted a salmon I'd managed to catch in a nearby stream in the late afternoon, then cooked it in the flames. I was starving after walking the whole day. As I flipped it in the fire one last time before removing it and digging into my feast, I caught the eyes of one very sullen Andy through the flickering flames. His sunken face and distended eyeballs stared back with certain jealousy, as if he couldn't believe I was able to eat fresh fish and he wasn't.
"Sorry, buddy," I said, barely waiting for the fish to cool down before sinking my teeth into its belly.
