One hot summer day, chance —or fate— brought Amelia and Florian together in Granada, during a visit to the fantastic historical complex of the Alhambra. She, 32, a successful Spanish engineer, partner in a technology venture, independent, single. He, 42, a German historian who has lived in Spain for 10 years, separated and very lonely. Their spontaneous affinity leads them to share the whole Saturday night until very late at night. When their relationship was reaching the peak of physical love, she brutally rejects him, leaving him devastated and bewildered.
But, to the reader's intrigue, Amelia flees the next day, full of affliction, to Malaga, where she meets Miguel, a 36-year-old Spaniard, a merchant, in a sordid situation that leads her to become dependent on him and, later, his lover. At this point we don't understand what could have made her reject the first and, later, subjugate herself to the second. Through the words of the three characters, we learn about the intricate web that supports Amelia's spirit, dominated by a secret, that she has been carrying since her adolescence. Such is her mental uncertainty that, after a year devoted to Miguel, she contacts the German again. He, with a noble soul and still in love with her, comes to her aid, only to be rejected once again.
Little by little the plot unfolds and we learn about the heavy cross that she has carried throughout her life and that has led her to degrade herself to the extreme.
Will she abandon the torrid physical love that Miguel provides her? Will Florian's persistence be able to uncover the trauma that afflicts her?
