I was born in England, but have lived in Southern California for many years. I m now retired and live in the Pacific NW in a little seaside city amongst the giant redwoods and wonderful harbor, almost at the Oregon border. My husband and I have one cat, called Midnight and she is featured in two of my latest Sci-Fi short stories. I love Science Fiction, animals, and trying to help others. I publish under Doreen Milstead as well as my own name. My photo was taken right before the coronation of QE II in the UK.
Nellie Robinson was a skilled rug weaver living a simple, yet unfulfilling life just outside the bustling city of New York. Though her craft brought her joy, she yearned for something more - to expand her knowledge of the ancient art while experiencing the thrill of adventure in finding a lifetime partner in the rugged expanse of the American West.
After much contemplation and a heart full of hope, Nellie finally made the bold decision to respond to an advertisement in the local newspaper seeking a bride for a rancher in Arizona. With trembling hands, she penned her letter to George Powell, pouring her dreams onto the pages and sealing her fate with a drop of wax. As she entrusted the letter to the postman, a mix of excitement and nervousness fluttered in her chest. Days turned into weeks as she anxiously awaited a reply, wondering if her leap of faith would lead her to the love and adventure she so desperately sought.
The weeks dragged on, each day feeling longer and more arduous than the last. Nellie found herself constantly checking the mailbox, her heart skipping a beat each time she heard the creak of the hinge as she pulled it open. But weeks dragged on, and still, there was no reply from George Powell.
Doubt began to creep in, whispering in her ear that perhaps she had been foolish to believe in such a wild idea. Maybe George had found someone else, someone more daring and exciting than a simple rug weaver from New York. Nellie's hands trembled as she went about her daily tasks, her mind consumed with thoughts of what could have been.
