In 14th century England, the Black Death swept across the land, bringing endless death and fear. In this disaster, Geoffrey Chaucer, an ordinary man, survived and witnessed the death of his family and friends, as well as the corruption and powerlessness of society under the shadow of death. Once an ordinary man, under the extreme test of life and death, Geoffrey began to think about the nature of society, people and power, the hypocrisy of religion and the complexity of human nature.
As Geoffrey became more concerned about social injustice and the plight of the poor, he used his pen as a weapon to create the influential "Canterbury Tales", which revealed the ugliness and inequality of British society at the time through vivid characters and satirical writing. As his works were widely circulated, he gradually transformed from an ordinary person into a thinker and became one of the representatives of Enlightenment thought.
However, on Geoffrey's road to change, he never forgot the power to change fate. By helping a poor young man, he changed William's life trajectory and made him a well-known poet in society. Geoffrey's thoughts and works eventually not only changed his personal destiny, but also began to influence the direction of the entire society, becoming an important force to promote reform and progress.
This is a historical novel about despair and awakening, poverty and struggle. It reveals how, in the era when the Black Death was raging, one could find the deepest light of human nature between life and death, and how to push society into the future through thought and creation.
