Dhan Gopal Mukerji (1890–1936) was the only Indian- American writer to have won the John Newbery Medal in 1928 for his distinguished contribution to American Literature for Children. Born in a jungle village, Kajangal, near Calcutta, India, he went to the United States at the age of 19. Educated at the University of California and Stanford University, Mukerji was the first popular Indian writer in English. He began his most prolific period of writing when he moved to New York in the 1920s. Kari the Elephant was the first to see publication, in 1922, followed by Hari the Jungle Lad in 1924 and Gay-Neck, the Story of a Pigeon in 1927.
