Beginning his career as leader writer on The Sunday Times in 1965, he rose to become deputy editor in 1981 and for many years wrote the influential political column, Sunday. He left after the paper was bought by Rupert Murdoch, and became a lead political commentator for the Guardian until his death in 2003.
