An award winning and distinguished poet, James Berry was born in Jamaica and grew up in a tiny village on the coast. He moved to the UK in 1948 where he became a leading campaigner for black people. One of the first black writers to achieve wider recognition, he was awarded an OBE in 1990 and was a strong advocate for young black writers.
He divided his time between Great Britain and Jamaica until his death in 2017.
