Marcus Merryman was born and brought up in Baltimore, Maryland. After spending a year at Edinburgh University, he completed a PhD at the Institute of Historical research, University of London. Appointed a founding lecturer of Lancaster University, he became one of its longest-serving members. He established himself as a distinguished scholar, combining historical, archaeological and cartographic research in an innovative and stimulating manner. However, his first love was teaching, for which we won a national award.
