Peter Friesen was born in Tula, Russia. He graduated from the Institute of Asian and African Countries at Lomonosov Moscow State University. He also studied in Japan at Soka University in Hachoji, Tokyo, and in Israel at Midreshet Ben Gurion - Ben Gurion Research Institute.
