Pierre Gobinet discovered scuba-diving while growing up in the United States, and genuinely believes that life is better underwater. He has so far managed to curtail his nitrogen addiction during his eclectic careers working as a French Gendarmerie officer and then as an academic researcher and writer. In 2011 the events in Cairo’s Tahrir Square prompted him to weave real-life dive-instructor tales into a novel that ultimately became The Freelancers. He currently lives in Paris.
