Michigan-born James Oliver Curwood, author of thirty-three books, was one of the world's most popular adventure writers, often ranked in a class with Jack London and Zane Grey. Curwood's realm was the North and Northwest; his assets, a remarkable imagination and insight into animals, a love of nature, and a born storytelling gift. He was a seasoned hunter and tracker himself when he faced the open jaws of a grizzly who chose not to kill him. The encounter transformed him and became the inspiration for his novel The Bear, which was the basis for Jean-Jacques Annaud's film success.

Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950) is the creator of Tarzan, one of the most popular fictional characters of all time, and John Carter, hero of the Barsoom science fiction series. Burroughs was a prolific author, writing almost 70 books before his death in 1950, and was one of the first authors to popularize a character across multiple media, as he did with Tarzan’s appearance in comic strips, movies, and merchandise. Residing in Hawaii at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbour in 1941, Burroughs was drawn into the Second World War and became one of the oldest war correspondents at the time. Edgar Rice Burroughs’s popularity continues to be memorialized through the community of Tarzana, California, which is named after the ranch he owned in the area, and through the Burrough crater on Mars, which was named in his honour.
Francis Bret Harte (1836 - 1902) was an American short-story writer, poet, and humorist. Best remembered for his stories fiction stories concerning the California Gold Rush, featuring miners, gamblers, and other romantic figures. He helped create the American local-colour writing style, which attempted to better represent the particularities of a place and its inhabitants through elements such as dialect, landscape, and folklore. In a career spanning more than four decades, he wrote poetry, plays, lectures, book reviews, editorials, and magazine sketches in addition to fiction.
Robert W Chambers (1865-1933) was born in Brooklyn, New York.
During World War I he wrote war adventure novels, and war stories. After 1924 he devoted himself solely to writing historical fiction.
On July 12, 1898, he married Elsa Vaughn Moller. They had a son, Robert Edward Stuart Chambers.
Robert W. Chambers died on December 16, 1933, after having undergone intestinal surgery three days earlier.
