Simon Fry is a professional artist and sometime teacher. This is his first novel.
The year is 2016 and it's Carnival-time in Venice. Final-year students Bianca and Jessica are in a palazzo on the Grand Canal, reading through a pile of long-abandoned manuscripts. They soon realise that they're drafts for some of Shakespeare's plays - written twenty or thirty years before they were supposed to have been.
The arrival of an unexpected guest, is followed shortly afterwards by the theft of the manuscripts, and the disappearance of Bianca. A desperate Jessica turns to her boyfriend, Tony, for help.
How are these events linked to the mysterious death of Tony's best friend in Stratford-upon-Avon six years earlier? And who could have written those manuscripts, when Shakespeare was only an eleven
or twelve year-old schoolboy?
In a bid to answer these questions and solve the crimes, Tony and Jessica uncover a world of duplicity and deceit, where nobody, it seems, is quite who they appear to be. They are double-crossed, and their lives are threatened, but undaunted, amidst the excitement and confusions of the quatercentenary celebrations of the death of William Shakespeare, they persist in their quest.
