The Lower Power is Michele W. Miller’s fourth published novel. She has lived most of her life in Upper Manhattan—Harlem and Washington Heights—where her novels often take place and where she currently resides with her husband, 20-year-old twin sons, two cats, and a large dog. Formerly the chief government ethics prosecutor for NYC, she currently serves as General Counsel for a non-profit agency that provides re-entry services to the formerly incarcerated. She has herself overcome addiction, homelessness, and incarceration. She has a black belt in the Jaribu system of Karate and worked her way through law school dancing on roller skates.
In the latest thriller from critically acclaimed Michele W. Miller comes a "superbly written tale of urban survivors fighting to save themselves once more." (Publishers Weekly).
A gripping reimagining that weaves together supernatural suspense with historic events of the early 1990s.As New York City's crack epidemic rages,
Raven has overcome her addiction and will soon begin law school. But night terrors have begun to haunt her and her friends. Many of them return to drug use, disappear, or commit bizarre acts of violence. A mysterious new drug epidemic grips the city, while police corruption, a U.S. attorney campaigning for mayor, and riots hamstring the city's defense. Raven and her friends-along with a journalist trying to help a teenage prostitute-must stand up to the sadistic man behind the chaos or lose all they've gained. Yet, as recovering addicts, they are the most vulnerable to his inexplicably attractive powers.
The Lower Power combines the supernatural and social history for fans of Whitley Strieber's The Wolfen and Gabino Iglesias's The Devil Takes You Home.

"Consistently thrilling and immersive… impeccably drawn setting… A gritty, action-packed thriller anchored by a heroic duo worth cheering for." —Kirkus Reviews
"Whether from the viewpoint of a recovering or hopelessly lost addict, a concerned policeman, a relentless journalist or the other citizens of New York that live and breathe within the pages of Michele W. Miller's The Lower Power, the writing never delivers less than rich characters or a story of increasing urgency. This is a harsh but necessary novel of crime and addiction and violence, and the effects they have on those who are powerless...and the beauty in power being discovered."
—E.A. Aymar, author of No Home for Killers and When She Left

"Drugs and recovery and demonic possession, bad cops and nightmares, superstition and probably black magic, in Harlem and El Barrio and parts north and south. I know the places and recognizing the incredible details of the time and place was a gas... Gripping. I couldn't put it down until I found out what happened to those characters."
—Angela Dews, author of Harlem Hit and Run and Still, in the City.
"Reading this tense supernatural thriller set in NYC's 1980s crack epidemic is like falling down a rabbit hole and hoping, praying that there's some way out. Miller creates an authentic cast of characters who will break your heart and make you sit up and cheer."
