Sakina was born in New Mexico to black, Muslim converts. The mesmerizing presence of mountains, turquoise jewelry sold on the side of roads, and frequent indigenous dances downtown, compelled a deep appreciation of artistry for Sakina in childhood. When her brother gifted her a journal at age 12, she learned that writing helped cope with the reality of living with a mentally ill sister.
While working as a journalist, Sakina snagged the Top Ranked Examiner title every month for the seven years she was employed. As a member of a Facebook writing group, Sakina beat hundreds of applicants for the chance to get published. The resulting publication went on to become #1 in New Releases on Amazon. Furthermore, Sakina began singing and songwriting on YouTube. Reimagining lyrics to popular songs garnered the attention of Sessions Live who signed her as Singer/Songwriter.
When the pandemic hit, Sakina focused on writing on the topics of self-help and social justice on her Facebook page which landed her a Pillars Fund grant.
Sakina's foray into screenwriting occurred when she considered how impactful stories with visual components could be for the underrepresented groups featured in her writings. She submitted her first screenplay to Blcklst.com and received the following feedback, "One strength of this script is the good premise from which [she] chose to work [...]The supporting cast is another strength [...] The various neighbors that help or torment the protagonist are a diverse and interesting bunch that are fun and engaging to watch interact throughout.
With divorce and remarrying on the rise within Islamic communities in America, the book Stepmoms & Numbers, details the story of a Muslim step-parent and step-daughter using the premise of counting to demonstrate love for family. A nearly three-year-old Salama doesn't believe she knows anything about numbers nor does she understand why she sometimes has to stay in a new house with the stranger who married her dad. With the help of her stepmother, Salama begins to appreciate the advantages of having more people in her life caring for her, and she learns how numbers play a part in this experience.
