Why anyone should kick against her self-perceived societal illusions was inexplicable to all that knew Lucy, but she had. She never fathomed the why herself, bringing as it had, a hard-knock existence to the young, single mother of a challenging child. All changed for the better when Katrazyne moved in, only to cast up old acquaintances and a dreadful discovery about beginnings kept secret.
Lucy is haunted by the father of her child, a young man killed in action in Afghanistan who deigned them, has found solace in an intimate relationship with migrant workers Katrazyna and Modra. Although bright, low-skilled Lucy agrees to be a waitress with them. Then, newly released from jail, an old friend, Malkie, attracts Lucy back into a past epitomised by recalcitrant Sheridan, her old friend and Malkie's partner whose antisocial values set their ways. Volatile and only predicable in defiance of societal values as phoney fables, Lucy becomes distraught when her child, Carrie, tells of imaginary friends, Kathleen and Munga, befriending her - the exact same friends Lucy once had pre-Sheridan days. Suffering a fall, Katrazyna and Modra take Carrie away, enticing Lucy into following them into a surreal world of unsympathetic exploitation from which Sheridan's influence once shielded her. Sucked down by her own lusts and confusion, Malkie appears to misguide her as the roots of her past promiscuity, abuse and a lost chance for love with Girvan. A friend of her exploitative brother, Girvan had also rejected her because he felt ashamed of their relationship. The uncertainty of right and wrong demist before her as understanding of family, creed and a society seeking to exploit her body's need for passion to serve consumer-needs horrifically clarifies in her mind. Recovering from the fall, salvation in her relationship with Katrazyna and Modra offers hope to transcend desire's destruction and corporeal narratives except Girvan, seeking forgiveness, wishes back into her life. Lucy fights to determine a life tied up in fabricated fantasies and somatic sordidness for one of abounding love.
