Today I am celebrating the publication of my novellette, The Coal Crackers Woman. It is a historical romance on sale for only 99 cents. Not only can we learn alot about our present from reading about our past; but, thanks to fiction, we can enjoy the experience vicariously and add a few imaginative changes as we read about the activities of people from the past.
Maddy is a wife of a laborer from the late 19th century, while Peg is a very modern and successful woman in the story contemporary section. They are linked to each other by blood. This story is based on a previous story titled The Red Chest that was published in The Historical Collection, a Victory Tales Press anthology of romance stories in 2011. I have expanded the story to give a fuller picture of both the Barrett and OKeefe families.
My previous works include other short stories through Victory Tales Press entitled The Test of Time in the Summer Anthology, I Love Pie-which name I changed to The Sleeping Beauty Mystery, under which title you will find it here on SW. My novel, Angels Requiem, is a mystery thriller in paperback and ebook, which was published in 2010 here on Smashwords. In February, 2016 I published a short story on Amazon entitled The Tinkers Tale by my alternate pen name, Madelyn Kinsella.

Famous reporter, wealthy and privileged Peg O'Keefe, is laid off her TV news job. She returns to her childhood home, and also back to Planet Earth, as she loses all her perks, and becomes caregiver for her elderly family members. It seems the O'Keefe family is on a losing course in other ways, too - her father's death and stock losses as well as serious illness challenge the family. Intrigued - she finds papers in a hidden chest that her grandmother wrote. It tells the history of Maddy and Jack Barrett, her own great grandparents. Jack, an impoverished worker in Pennsylvania's coal mines, has a powerful spirit to overcome the inequities the miners suffered along with the mortal dangers in the mines during the tumultuous 1890s and into the 20th century. He disappears for periods of time and Maddy has to trust him, though only her love for him keeps her going. He comes through for her and for his men in the end with her help. The two share a lifelong passionate love affair. Their powerful adventure instills renewed hope in Peg that she can remake her future as it opens her heart to love in a way she never imagined.
