Diane M. Pratt lives on Cape Cod where she avoids the summer traffic by hiding at home with her trusty laptop, long-suffering husband, and all the chocolate she can find. Escaping from reality in a romance novel, the ultimate goal a happy ending, is her idea of a good read.
Tenley reaches a turning point in her life when a date calls her chubby, and she decides it is time to lose the date and the weight. Her goal is to be able to fit into her jeans from high school and she enlists her friends to help her. Thomas, a colleague and friend, strikes her as the athletic type, and during lunch in the Starling Engineering cafeteria she discusses his weekend activities of running, hiking, and biking, and decides if she takes up dieting and strenuous activity, she'll be able to reach her goal.
Thomas has admired Tenley from afar since she started working at Starling three years ago. When he starts having lunch with her and her friends and realizes his chance to be closer to her has arrived because of her decision to lose a few pounds, he enlists his friends to join the lunch group. Soon they are all hiking trails on weekends, and Thomas wonders if it's too soon to tell Tenley he wants more from her than friendship. Then comes the day she tells him he's her BGFF, best guy friend forever, and he knows the time has come to risk her friendship and tell her how he feels.
