Eight-year-old David and his five-year-old sister Rachel are abducted by two small-time ex-convicts. Rachel escapes unhurt but in a state of shock and cannot speak or react to the situation in a normal way.
Susan, mother of the children, and Alice, the children's grandmother, although horrified as circumstances unfold, cling to the hope that David will be found.
Susan's husband and father of the children, John carries the brunt of the burden to solve this tragedy on his shoulders He wants more than anything to rescue his son and save his wife from despair.
The county sheriff and his staff use every method and technology available to rescue the boy, yet, the two bumbling kidnappers stay one step ahead of them.
Young David copes. While alone and afraid, he prays for help. Help seems to come in the shape of a huge stray dog. David is comforted by the presence of the dog and a sudden appearance of his father on the scene. As he watches his father's pick-up truck drive away, his abductor grabs him reestablishing control.
Read it and live it from beginning to end through the experiences of each character involved: A child kidnapped, a family traumatized, a small-town sheriff perplexed, and two small-time criminals determined to survive at the expense of an eight-year-old boy and his family.
