It is Danny's first morning back home in Rattle Snake Cove, where he is continuing a lengthy recovery from extensive injuries which he incurred in Vietnam that had resulted in his receiving The Silver Star, and also a medical retirement.
Ring! Ring! goes the telephone
"I'll get it," Danny shouted to Maggie Ann, who was somewhere in the kitchen. "Where's my walking stick?"
Spying her husband's cane near his chair at the table, she called, "I'll bring it to you, Hon."
A few minutes later she asked, "Who was that?"
Looking puzzled, Danny said, "Somebody named Patsy. She said she's looking forward to seeing me next week. She said she's flying all her people down to see me on her plane. Who's Patsy?"
Remembering the doctor's suggestion to keep Danny calm, Maggie Ann thought quickly and said, "Oh, you poor dear. Let me put a record on our new stereo record player (she emphasized 'new stereo record player.') I bet you'll know who that was when you hear it, then."
A smooth female voice filled the room, 'I go out walkin', after midnight…', the record player continued the famous country song. "Oh, I know her. We listened to her all the time in Vietnam. I never knew her name, though." Danny continued to reminisce, "They had a DJ on Armed Forces Network, AFN, who played some absolutely great music every morning. He had a very deep bass voice. When he spoke, you couldn't help but listen. He told some real corny jokes and was always getting in trouble with his bosses, but we all loved him. The bosses didn't like his music. The bosses all wanted songs from the 40s, but the soldiers loved the new country music. Sergeant Dave was his name. I wonder how he's doing."
"Well, Darling. That was Patsy Cline on the phone! Oh my, you just talked to Patsy Cline! I love her singing."
