Funny enough, being a writer was not my first choice career. I remember seeing an advert when I was about 7, about a woman flying around the world. I asked my mom what job that was? It mesmerised me for a few months and there was nothing in the world that could change my mind. I was going to be an air hostess when I grew up, and that was that. Though around the age of 12, my school had a prom, and I needed to go to the salon. I barely remember the stylist doing my hair, because the entire time I was watching other girls/woman of all ages getting their hair styled. So many styles from cutting up do’s for weddings and mini flowers in between intricate folds of hair. Naturally, I now wanted to be a stylist for the rest of my life. It was just so cool. A few years later, after my first heartbreak, I started writing my feelings down, sobbing, thinking it was the end of the world of course. Didn’t notice at first that I had rhymed some sentences without even thinking about it. As time went by, I wrote about everything, happiness, sadness, anger, etc. I wrote more feelings that I spoke about out loud. Though I only wrote for myself. Until I needed extra pocket money and exploited my ability to rhyme, and wrote quite a few “Roses are red, violets are blue” poems for kids on Valentines day. The love for writing grew in secret, with only my close friends and family knowing I could. This is my leap of faith I hope you find the words you need from my work.
DAVID HOLMES lived a young boy's dream. A competitive gymnast, he was thrust into the Hollywood spotlight having been cast as a junior stuntman on the 1998 sci-fi movie, Lost in Space.
Two years later he landed the role as stunt double to Daniel Radcliffe in the Harry Potter films where he battled dragons, explored
underwater worlds and racked up more broomstick miles than anyone else in the Wizarding World. Then in 2009, David's world
changed when a horrific accident fractured his C6 and C7 vertebrae, leaving him paralysed from the chest down. In a period of emotional soul-searching, he came to an important realisation: he was a survivor, not a victim.
Since then, he has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds through the David Holmes Harry Potter Cricket Cup and is an ambassador for the Wings for Life Foundation and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore. Elsewhere,
David has been a published essay writer in the New York Times, and has given speeches in front of members of the royal family at both Buckingham Palace and Saint James's palace. He produced a BAFTA-nominated documentary about his life entitled The Boy Who Lived and posed for a powerful portrait in which he
stripped naked and set himself on fire. He lives in Essex.
