Port Tobacco, Maryland was one of the earliest towns established in the United States, dating back to the mid 1600’s. This work describes the history of Port Tobacco and its people, buildings and layout for those history buffs interested in such information. The author, James L. Barbour (the son of Robert Guy Barbour who created the sketches included herein), provides a summary of the early history of Port Tobacco, his father’s sketches of the town and a description of its residents and buildings. He also discusses the distinguished Revolutionary personages who lived in and near Port Tobacco at the nation’s founding, and later, the Lincoln conspiracy that included town resident, George Atzerodt, and the escape of the President’s assassin, John Wilkes Booth, who fled through Southern Maryland, across the Potomac and into Virginia.
