How well head coaches and assistant coaches navigate their relationships and deal with one another can have a huge impact on sports programs. Unfortunately, not much has been written about these relationships—until now.
In A Head Coach's Guide for Working with Assistants, Scott Rosberg dives into how head coaches and assistant coaches must work together and the elements that can contribute to the success or failure of a team and program.
Everything starts with the head coach and how he or she builds and develops these relationships. Rosberg discusses ways for a head coach to build a cohesive unit that works well together for the good of the program. He focuses on such things as:
The Roles of Head Coaches & Assistant Coaches
Characteristics of Good Head Coaches and Assistant Coaches
The Head Coach's Relationship with the Assistant Coach
Responsibilities of Assistant Coaches
Evaluations
While A Head Coach's Guide for Working with Assistants was written first and foremost for head coaches, it is also a great guide to help assistant coaches learn their role in this relationship. However, Rosberg has also written a companion book specifically for assistant coaches called, The Assistant Coach's Guide to Coaching. Both books are filled with important information for each group of coaches on best practices for how to handle this relationship that is so vital to team success.
