Lola Tostevin is a bilingual French-Canadian writer who writes mainly in English. She’s the author of three novels, a biography, eight collections of poetry, numerous pieces of short fiction, and two collections of literary essays and criticism. She has translated the work of many writers into English, including Anne Hébert, Hector de Saint-Denys Garneau, Nicole Brossard, and Paule Thévenin, and she translated into French Michael Ondaatje’s Elimination Dance. Her novel Frog Moon was translated into French and two of her collections of poetry, Color of Her Speech and ‘sophie, were translated into Italian. Tostevin taught creative writing at York University, Toronto and served as writer-in-residence at the University of Western Ontario, London.
Set in Toronto, Paris and Tunisia, Jasmine Man addresses issues of identity, family, art, culture and colonialism. What begins as a tentative exchange in a Paris park between Amy and Habib soon develops into a passionate affair. Amy, a wife and mother, is forced to make difficult decisions about her and her family's future in the wake of the steamy liaison. With Jasmine Man, Tostevin ultimately and deftly subverts the conventions of the traditional romance novel, creating a world where possibilities abound for all.
