Shakespeare tells us Romeo fell in love with Juliet's cousin Rosaline before he met Juliet. Some people forget that factum. He also tells us Rosaline's brother Thibault challenged Romeo to a duel and was killed by him. Yes, I think I remember that.
But there's a great deal the Englishman doesn't tell.
For example the name Capulet's not Italian it's French. Interesting. And I suspect you didn't know when their faction settled in Verona, Juliet's parents didn't lead their House as prima Don and prima Donna. It was Rosaline's parents who settled in Verona first. Hmmn?
As newlyweds they arrived from Lyon to visit a far flung relation, a sister who couldn't attend their nuptials. At that turning point of their tour, two weeks were allowed to enjoy their time Verona. Once returned to Lyon they would be expected to assume their new stations as the premiere Sieur and Dame of their faction.
That's what was expected.
Capulet is their story, an epic genesis tale in six volumes, beginning with the betrothal of Armand de Capulet and Ilaria Marchand as children. The separate threads of their lives converge through their upbringing, courtship and hasty war marriage that triggers their tour to Verona. Then a cascade of dire events forces them to linger. Armand's brother is summoned in support, intent on a swift return until he meets Valentina (Juliet's mother).
Now three Capulets are held in Verona when a compatriot, the Duchess de Paris arrives in pursuit of trade and proposes an alliance. The Capulets stay. The faction rises. But towering ambition comes at a towering cost and more than one dear life is taken from them.
Other familiar characters populate their story of course. But this is not only the tale of how the Capulets came to Verona, but of how the most famous families of all time came to be at each other's throats and… well you know their ending, it's time to know their beginning.
This is the love story of Armand and Ilaria from their betrothal in Lyon 'til the day the feud claims his life in Verona. His death at the end of Book 6, revealed at the start of Book 1, finally hands the reins of power to Juliet's parents. At that moment, Rosaline is eight years old. Eight years later, one month before Juliet turns 14, Rosaline will meet Romeo.
