Canaletto (Giovanni Antonio Canal) (Venise, 1697 – 1768) Comme son père, il commença sa carrière comme peintre de décors de théâtre. Influencé par Giovanni Panini, il se spécialisa dans les vedute (vues) de Venise, sa ville natale. Les violents contrastes entre ombre et lumière sont typiques de cet artiste. Et, si certaines de ses vues sont d'un intérêt purement topographique, certaines décrivent des sujets festifs ou solennels. Il publia aussi, grâce à John Smith, son agent, une série de gravures de cappricci. Il trouvait ses principaux acheteurs dans l'aristocratie britannique car ses vues leur rappelaient leur Grand Tour. Dans ses peintures, la perspective géométrique et les couleurs ont une fonction structurante. Canaletto passa dix ans en Angleterre. John Smith vendit des oeuvres de Canaletto à George III, créant ainsi la collection royale de Canaletto. Ses plus grandes oeuvres influencèrent la peinture de paysage du XIXe siècle.
