Lai Wen es un seudónimo. Nacida en Pekín en 1970 la autora vive en Canadá con su esposo y sus dos hijas. Creció entre la clase trabajadora, luego obtuvo una beca para la Universidad de Pekín y se vio involucrada en las protestas, durante las cuales murieron varios amigos suyos. Poco después abandonó China para realizar un programa de estudios en el extranjero y desde entonces vive en Canadá.
La estudiante de Tiananmén es una novela basada libremente en la vida de la autora y las cosas que le sucedieron durante su juventud. Para ello, Lai Wen usa las técnicas de la ficción para modelar y estructurar la novela y distanciarse del personaje.

As she grows up, Lai comes to discern the realities of the country she lives in. But she also goes through the ebbs and flows of friendships; troubles and rewards at home and at school; and the first steps and missteps in love. A gifted student, she attends the prestigious Peking University; while there she becomes involved in the student protests that have been gathering speed. It is the late 1980s, and change is in the air . . .
