Jess McGeachin is an author and illustrator living in Naarm (Melbourne, Australia).
His debut picture book, Fly, was published in 2019 by Puffin and was shortlisted for the Children's Book Council of Australia and Queensland Literary Awards.
Jess has since published nine books locally and internationally, with more on the way. His first two non-fiction books, Deep and Kind, were published in 2022. Deep was the winner of the 2023 CBCA Eve Pownall Award. Kind and The Tree at Number 43 are the co-winners of the Environment Awards for Children's Literature.
Jess draws quite literally from a day job at Melbourne Museum, where he's lucky enough to help design exhibitions and occasionally get lost in the basement.
What wonders are soaring far above your head? Come on a journey to meet the creatures who live high in the treetops, the birds that ride the wind, the people who have braved the highest mountain summits, and the stories we tell to explain the night-time's dazzling stars. There is a whole world in the sky, waiting to be discovered...
Selected by the CBCA on the list of Notable Books for 2024 in the Eve Pownall Award category, High is an illustrated non-fiction book that explores the natural world above us and the efforts humans have made to venture high above the Earth, from early flying machines to modern skyscrapers. Linking seemingly diverse subject matter, it invites the reader to explore the wonder of the universe.
