The Oyo Empire is a high-interest novella of magic realism. The fairytale of this mythical Oyo Empire is told by the mononymous gimlet-eyed Ijapa, the endomorph, the folk hero and the fabled protagonist of antiquity of Yoruba folktales. Versed in folk etymology and folk memory, he lets us know that he belongs to the midgets, the small gimlet-eyed fairies with magic carpets and supernatural/magic powers who founded the mythical Oyo Empire about 25, 000 years ago when myths, mythologies, taboos, superstitions and many flights of imaginations were as common as the daisies on a loamy soil. The novella is as entertaining as the vaudevillian artists, and its sole poem--In Our Own Voices, when adapted into a song would be as delicious as the music of the spheres.
