Hämeenkyrön Sasin kylässä eletään aikaa, jolloin Suomen kansa ponnistelee kohti itsenäisyyttä läpi tsaarinajan sortovuosien. Vuoden 1917 levottomuudet ja niitä seurannut sisällissota 1918 pyyhkäisevät myös Hämeenkyrön yli täydellä voimalla.
Ketunkiven Miina syntyy Sasissa 1800-luvun nälkävuosien aikana heiveröisenä ja toinen silmä sokeana. Elämää varjostaa väkivaltainen isä. Rakkautta ja turvaa hän saa mummulta ja äidiltä, joilta hän myös oppii parantajan- ja hierojantaitonsa.
Naapurin Heikin kanssa Miina tuntee kohtalonyhteyttä, joka jatkuu lämpimänä ystävyytenä läpi elämän.
