Tulenviejät on tarina 13-vuotiaista kaksosista Timistä ja Rebekasta sekä heidän koirastaan Nemosta, jotka asuvat kuivuuden riuduttamassa Vuorimaassa. Lapset tempaistaan vaarojen täyttämälle matkalle mukanaan pullo, joka on avain kuivuuden päättymiseen. Tarinan kolmas päähenkilö on rikkinäisen lapsuuden elänyt 14-vuotias Eric.
Tulenviejät on tarina toivosta, ihmisten kyvystä selviytyä, vaikka kaikki tuttu ja turvallinen murenee ympäriltä ja yhteiskunnan rakenteet pettävät.
