A British trawler fishing off north Iceland catches several wooden crates in its nets. The crates contain ingots of Russian gold stolen during World War 2. The trawler is caught in a ferocious storm but before it can reach safety, is capsized by the heavy seas. Only the skipper survives. He tells his son the story of the gold but only after his father's death does his son decide to find the wreck and salvage the contents. The daughter of a former u-boat officer who now lays dying in a Boston hospital is given an old diary by her father. The diary contains details of the gold and how it came to be in the wooden crates found off north Iceland. A wealthy German businessman whose father served in the same U-boat as the dying man, believes the diary once belonged to his father but was stolen during his time in a British PoW camp in Reykjavik. For years he has been seaching for the diary. When the story of the gold reaches the media he hires two American mercenaries to find find both the diary and the gold but they will not be alone in their search. .
