For nearly three decade, Stan Minasian presided over the non-profit organization Marine Mammal Fund (later changed to Animal Fund), whose purpose was to end the killing of dolphins during fishing operations of the U.S. purse seine tuna fleets. Over the past forty years, over eight million dolphins have perished in U.S. tuna nets.
In the process of ending the U.S. involvement, he produced two major television documentary films on this issue, one of which was the recipient of three Emmy Awards. His documentary film, Where Have All the Dolphins Gone?, hosted by the late George C. Scott, was broadcast primetime on the Discovery Channel and was instrumental in all three U.S. tuna canneries (StarKist, Chicken-of-the-Sea, and BumbleBee) no longer accepting tuna caught by the use of dolphins, thus establishing the "Dolphin Safe" label on all cans of tuna sold in the United States.
Minasian has written and lectured extensively on protecting the ocean and its inhabitants and is currently working with engineers to develop ropeless crab and lobster traps to prevent the entanglement and death of whales and turtles along both coasts of the United States.
As a filmmaker, Minasian has also written and produced and co-produced documentaries centering on animal education and welfare issues. Below is a partial list of his productions and links for free viewing.

Of the millions of creatures that share the earth with us, few are more beloved than the dolphins. Throughout history, dolphins have played a significent role in shaping our philosophy and helping us to better understand and appreciate the natural world. Dolphins have unknowingly becomesymbols of concern for the environment, and their joyous lifestyle, centered on friendships within their complex social structure, is something to be admired and emulated. Yet for all the admiration we have for dolphins, and the inspiration they instill in us, little is known about how they live their lives, and that is the basis and reason for this book.
Just like people, individual dolphins possess their own distinct personalities. Some are bold, some are shy. Some are resolute, while others are more care-free. Yet they all have one thing in common: they are highly intelligent social animals with a well-defined sense of self-awareness. The more we learn about dolphins, the more we realize that there is most assuredly an alien form of sophisticated intelligence right here on planet earth.
