The author taught middle and high school students with mild to moderate learning disabilities (LD, EBD, SED, ASD, DCD) for 29 years in California, Texas, and Minnesota. She became convinced early on that students with disabilities can see themselves and envision their futures through the lense of competencies instead of deficiencies when they are given the tools and strategies to create successful projects.
She is currently living with her husband of 50 years in New Hampshire and enjoying the incomparable company of her daughter, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren.
The Power of Service is a step-by-step guide for teachers who want to lead students through the process of envisioning and creating service projects, using an authentic learning model. My focus is on teaching students with behavioral and emotional needs, because that is what I did for nearly 30 years, and because these students are too often excluded from creative learning opportunities, while being most in need of the kind of instruction and skill development authentic learning provides. However, this guide can be used by teachers in any setting, as well as children's mental health clinicians. Section 1 introduces instruction in the "soft skills" everyone needs to work effectively in groups. Section 2 outlines the process of creating a Strategic Action Plan. Section 3 offers examples of service projects, skills they teach and reinforce, and suggestions for similar projects appropriate for various kinds of student groups and communities.
