What happens when a loner befriends a puny kid that frequently gets picked on? The result is the friendship between Aurora "Rory'" Flynn and Malcolm Bennett.
From the time they were four years old, they were inseparable. But a naval transfer for Rory's mechanic father when they are ten years old split them apart. They try to keep in touch over the years but drift apart.
Thirteen years later, still the loner, Rory serves as a wheel mechanic in the Second Armored Division deployed in the Middle East. While on a routine assignment, she and her Army buddy, Brad Oglesby, encounter enemy forces that forever change their lives. Rory's injuries, and Brad's death, send her back to civilian life in Norfolk, Virginia.
As Rory begins to heal in Norfolk, Malcolm Bennett, now a Pine Bluff High School math teacher, must confront his own issues. A chance meeting at the animal shelter where Malcolm volunteers, the two friends reunite as Rory looks for a companion dog.
Their friendship picks up where it left off, bringing to the surface a strong connection with each other. But Rory's trauma sends her back home to her parents in Pensacola. While there, she encounters further setbacks, causing her to retreat into herself. Worried out of their minds, Greg and Jessica Flynn contact Malcolm hoping he could reach her as he did when they were children. But can Malcolm help Rory before it's too late?
