My name Dr. Katherine Korkidis. Over my many years in teaching my students have affectionately called me Dr. K. I currently have three master’s degrees, two in the physical sciences, a master’s in chemical physics and a master’s in physical chemistry, in addition to an MBA in International Business and Marketing. I received my PhD in Biophysical Chemistry and did two years of Postdoctoral work in Experimental Hematology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. After completing my postdoctoral work, I began to work in Industry. I was paid to do my own original research. As part of my position I taught at many universities and developed new technologies while having the opportunity to travel throughout the US/Canada, Europe, Russia, and the Far East. It was a wonderful experience, and I could teach and write at every turn. Eventually I realized how much I enjoyed teaching and writing and returned to my passion. Today I am a writer of sweet contemporary romance and historical fiction as my genres of choice. Josette is my first novel.
Captain Nicholas is sitting in a chair on the balcony of his home. His feet lazyingly extended onto the posts of his deck. A pipe in his mouth giving off fragrant smoke. His pipe is his only companion in his loneliness.
It is a hot August night. A beautiful night. The moon appears red as it reflects on the still waters below. At times the multi-colored sky of the sunset blends into the water offering an illusion of falling droplets of golden yellow and bright green onto its red hue.
Captain Nicholas is alone on his balcony. His wife, his companion, is no longer with him. She passed one year ago. His only son lives far away. He is now married with children. As often as is possible he remembers his father and indeed visits him.
All his life is now before him. A few years ago he and his partner moved into his paternal home after the passing of his parents. He made changes, rebuilt sections of the original one story home where he was born and raised. Most significantly he added a balcony overlooking his first love, the sea. It was in this house that he experienced his first sunrise and the colorful display, painting of a sunset over the water. This is where he wishes to spend his remaining years.
He is alone now, all alone. Captain Nicholas is past eighty and feels tired. Tonight he is smoking his pipe on his balcony enjoying the view given to him by nature. The smoke from his pipe rises up combining at first with the colors surrounding him, but then disappears into the darkness of the night.
Captain Nicholas, alone, sits across his sea.
