Engines of Cunning Men portrays the unforeseen impacts from uncontrolled technology, especially in the hands of those with evil agendas. My story begins with Will Leitner, a relatively new writer, arriving on the island of Terceira in the Azores to begin work on his second novel and hopefully, to overcome depression from the recent failure of his marriage. He meets Julia Banner at a tavern and feels some curiosity for this quiet and attractive woman. A few meetings later, Julia shares her career as a biocomputational research scientist. After feeling she can trust Will, she reveals more – while testing an experimental computer code variable, she observed mysterious computer effects and information seemingly outside the realm of modern science. She quickly understands that her discovery could transform medicine but also realizes in the wrong hands, it could eradicate the global population. Julia's knowledge could be weaponized and she knew she would become a target if the information became public. She traveled to Terceira for her safety and anonymity. Over time, Will becomes more deeply involved in her dilemma which might also endanger him. Together, they look for a solution to their complex problem … and for diversions, they absorb the island's awesome beauty and culture as well as some seemingly supernatural dimensions. One night, Julia has a frightening encounter ... fearing that her pursuers may have found her, she senses a need to leave the island. Will agrees to accompany her and they seek haven in several European cities but her pursuers follow. On their journey, they hear a broadcast about a new, highly lethal viral outbreak and Julia thinks it could be connected to her work. After a few narrow escapes, Julia's sense of responsibility and a healthy dose of anger emerge and compel her to seek a way to counteract the virus and to fight back against the perpetrators of the outbreak. Their story culminates in a chase with a violent climax as Will must make a difficult decision to protect Julia.
