Called by some a multi-tasking ninja, Jessica Kemery lives in Crystal Lake, Illinois, where she works a day job so that her dog, Rocky, can live a life of pampered luxury. The Hobbit is the first book she read, and she has been searching for dragons ever since. She has two teenagers who firmly believe their mother is slightly unhinged and roll their eyes every time she starts playing the greatest hits of the '80s. She also has a husband who dreams of becoming her business manager one day when she "makes it big." Powered by caffeine and the bare minimum of sleep on a nightly basis, she thinks the world's greatest invention is meal delivery services.

Jessica Kemery has a bio at the end of her entertaining novel, The Suns of Ocaña, in which she lists some of her favorite things which are also my favorite things: caffeine, pets and family. Reading her novel transported me to another world where two suns, two moons and a dense fog swirl around a world where magic, monsters and creatures intersect with Princesses who like to take matters into their own hands and really do not like to wait for the male characters to come to their rescue.
The novel follows the life of Bryn, a Princess of a Kingdom called Vale. Her family has a secret, and she needs to find it. In the process, she gets in touch with the magic around her past and within herself. Her best friend Nyla is a take charge and assertive person who always stands by Bryn. They face down some evil characters and take care to stay kind and positive during their ordeal.
The novel was short at just over 200 pages and was quick reading. It was an enjoyable read and I really appreciated the fact that there was no profanity or graphic scenes. It was just a fun introduction to Kemery's world of Ocaña. She did some rather nice world-building, and I am looking forward to the next one in the series.
5.0 out of 5 stars Well-written, highly imaginative, fast-paced and engaging.

This story is about a young woman who discovers she is stronger than she knows, and finds family and love along the way. It is set in a steampunk, alternative history world very much like our own, if it was covered with fog and inhabited by dangerous monsters. The characters are all deep, well-developed and interesting; the plot has many unexpected twists that keep the reader interested and engaged until the end. Fans of Terry Brooks and Lindsay Buroker will find this read particularly interesting.
